What is the hydraulic hose color code?

For the convenience of engineers designing hydraulic systems, a color coding standard is used in hydraulic circuit schematics. This does not apply to the hose itself. In a hydraulic circuit or system, the same hose can be used to fulfill multiple requirements in the circuit. However, for the standards used in hydraulic circuit design, the following diagram illustrates how color codes are used. This standardized color code for flow and pressure was developed by the Joint Industry Conference (JIC) and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).

RED: Operating system pressure

Red signifies fluid pressure of the operating system. This hoses is often used for the piping that extends from the pump to the pressure relief valve, then to the first component restrict flow.

BLUE:Exhaust-flow without restriction

Blue is used to show the fluid is not restrict, indicating there is minimal fluid pressure.

GREEN:Intake-reservoir to pump

Green signifies the intake fluid that flows from the reservoir to the pump.

YELLOW:Controlled flow

Yellow illustrates the controlled(metered) fluid flow after the fluid passes through a restriction valve.

ORANGE:Reduced pressure from system pressure

Orange shows the fluid that has been reduced from the system pressure, such as the fluid at the output of a pressure regulated valve.

VIOLET:Increased fluid pressure

Violet indicates the increased fluid pressure as a result of an amplified system pressure. Such as fluid at the output of the intensifier (a machine for transforming hydraulic power at low pressure into a reduced volume at higher pressure).

WHITE:System with no pressure

White signifies the fluid pressure in the system is at zero or no pressure. Such as fluid at the output of the intensifier when the pump is not operational.

What is the hydraulic hose color used for?

It is important to note that while color coding can provide a general indication of a hydraulic hose’s purpose, it is not a standardized method across all manufacturers. Therefore, it is crucial to verify the hose’s specifications and usage guidelines by referring to the manufacturer’s documentation or labeling.
